Indoors, the constraint is rarely brightness — it's viewing distance and finish. Get the pitch wrong and a beautiful screen looks like a grid of dots to the customer standing in front of it.

Indoor displays live at close range. A customer at a service counter, a visitor in a lobby, a family in a showroom — most of them are within a few metres of the screen, which is exactly where a coarse pixel pitch stops being invisible. This is the single most common specification mistake we see: an outdoor-grade pitch bought for an indoor space because it quoted cheaper per square foot.

The second thing that changes indoors is the room itself. Ambient light from a glass frontage, spotlights aimed at merchandise, or a dim interior all change how bright the display needs to be — and an indoor panel run at full brightness in a dark room is uncomfortable to look at, not impressive.

The third is access. Indoor displays are usually mounted flush to a wall or set into a recess, which removes any possibility of servicing from behind. That has to be decided before the structure is built, not after.

  • Reception areas, lobbies and waiting rooms
  • Menu boards and counter displays where content changes regularly
  • Conference rooms and auditoriums replacing projectors in lit spaces

What to get right

The decisions that are expensive to reverse once the structure is built.

Pitch is driven by the closest viewer, not the average one

Specify for the person standing nearest the screen, because they are the one who notices the pixels. In a showroom or a lobby that is often within two to three metres, which pushes you to a finer pitch than the room's overall size would suggest. This is the choice that most affects price, so it's worth getting right rather than getting cheap.

Ambient light, not maximum brightness, sets the target

A display near a glass frontage competes with daylight for part of the day; one in an interior corridor does not. Indoor panels are specified to be comfortable in the room they are actually in, with brightness scheduled to change through the day where the light does. Running a panel harder than the room needs shortens its life and irritates the people looking at it.

Flush mounting means front service, decided upfront

Most indoor installations sit tight against a wall or inside a recess, leaving no working space behind. That makes front-serviceable cabinets the practical choice, and it changes the fabrication of the mounting structure. Deciding this after the wall is built is the expensive path.

The room's finish is part of the job

Indoors, the edges show. Trim, bezel alignment, how cable and power are concealed, and how the display meets the surrounding wall are all visible from a metre away in a way they never are on a facade. We treat the surround as part of the installation rather than something left to whoever fits out the space.

Typical installations

  • Showroom feature wall
    A large display behind the product, running brand and product visuals. Colour consistency matters here — the screen sits next to the physical product a customer is comparing it against.
  • Reception and lobby display
    Welcome content, wayfinding and announcements in an area people pass through slowly. Usually close-range viewing, so fine pitch and a quiet, low-glare finish.
  • Counter and queue displays
    Menus, offers, token numbers or waiting information read from a few metres while someone stands still — the most demanding case for legibility and the easiest to under-specify.
  • Meeting rooms and auditoriums
    Where a projector washes out in a lit room, an LED wall doesn't. Sizing follows the seating layout and the back row's distance rather than the wall's dimensions.

It follows from the closest comfortable viewing distance. The working rule of thumb is that the pitch in millimetres is roughly that distance in metres — so a screen people stand two to three metres from wants a fine pitch, while one across a large hall can be coarser and cheaper. We measure the actual distances on site rather than guessing from a floor plan.
